Welcome to Broadoak Gardens
A 5-Star Garden of National Significance
Just 20 minutes north of Christchurch, Broadoak Gardens is a 5-star Garden of National Significance — a true labour of love created by owners Claire and Shaun. What began as a bare block has been transformed into a beautifully structured lifestyle property inspired by classic English garden traditions.
At its heart is a two-acre formal garden divided into three distinct “garden rooms,” tucked behind tall hedges and brick pillars. Visitors can wander through traditional English borders, sculpted knot gardens, a sunken native garden, and charming surprises like a life-sized chessboard and peacock sculptures. A 100-year-old teak “Narnia door” opens onto the wedding lawn and open-front chapel — a magical setting for summer ceremonies.
Beyond the formal gardens, Broadoak is a fully working lifestyle block with orchards, vegetable beds, hazelnuts, beehives, and chickens, offering an authentic glimpse into country living.
Visitor Information:
Broadoak is open by appointment from 1 September to 31 March. Individuals and groups are welcome, but bookings are essential. Morning or afternoon tea, BYO catering options, and guided tours with Broadoak staff can all be arranged. Pricing is available on request.
During the warmer months, Broadoak also hosts boutique weddings and private events, centred around the estate’s charming English pub, the Bike ‘n Bovine. Set within a one-acre garden of lawns, a lily pond, and hydrangeas, the venue offers a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere.
Guests are welcome to stay onsite in a peaceful two-bedroom cottage — an ideal retreat for wedding parties, garden enthusiasts, or travellers exploring North Canterbury’s vineyards and countryside.
Whether you’re here to tour the gardens, celebrate a special occasion, or plan your wedding, Broadoak offers beauty, character, and warm hospitality.

“Just had the pleasure to attend a wedding reception here in January 2025 - wow, stunning venue and stunning hospitality service.
There is so much to see and do at Broadoak, and the atmosphere was unforgettable - between the quaint Bike & Bovine ‘pub’ with many cozy nooks / the indoor outdoor flow louvre sheltered area we used for dining / about a dozen vast and truly immaculate garden features to wander the evening through.
A wood fired pizza truck was brought in by caterers while the family of Broadoak ran the bar and hosted the venue operation.
Lovingly cared for place, a real peaceful gem of a destination in North Canterbury.”

“My husband and I had our wedding here a few weeks ago now, and I can’t recommend Broadoak enough. The hosts were accomodating and warm, and made planning our ceremony a breeze. The venue is gorgeous - we first had a walk through in the middle of winter and even when it wasn’t in bloom we still felt the magic immediately and knew this was where we wanted to get married. The day was beautiful, the sun was out and the gardens were in bloom. Broadoak was the most wonderful place to celebrate our marriage. The cottage on site was perfect for getting ready and so calming the morning of opening the doors to birds chirping and being able to take a moment to breathe it all in with fresh air. Thank you so much Shaun, Claire and Hannah for helping make our day so so special.”

“Delightful time spent here during their open day. It was a visual feast of flowers, greenery, statues and quirky little finds. A well presented series of gardens, feature gardens, walled gardens. The fragrances whilst meandering through were delightful. The Old World pub has that wonderful charm of a bygone era. The photos capture it all. Thank you for a great opportunity to visit and see the beauty you have captured. They have a website, so check them out.”
